Angry Drivers Increase Risk Of Car Accidents In Monterey

RoadRage2

There are plenty of reasons for people to feel stressed today. Rising costs, concerns over jobs or finances, and personal problems can all leave you frustrated and more prone to angry outbursts. Unfortunately, this can pose serious risks when you are behind the wheel. Find out more about how aggressive driving and road rage are common factors in car accidents in Monterey.

Driver Purposely Hits Other Motorist In Road Rage Crash In Monterey County

Road rage is being blamed for a recent car accident in Monterey County. According to a March 30, 2023 KOIN 46 News report, two drivers were involved in a crash on Del Monte Boulevard and Palm Avenue in Marina. Police claim that the parties began engaging in aggressive driving behavior toward one another in Salinas.

Their roadway feud went on for miles before the final collision. Even after the crash, one of the drivers continued to repeatedly ram the other’s vehicle from behind. That driver, a 28-year-old Greenfield man, was arrested by Marina Police and now faces criminal charges.

Unfortunately, these types of car accidents are increasingly common. While not every incident rises to the level of road rage, many people engage in aggressive driving behaviors that put others at risk. These include:

  • Failing to yield the right of way when appropriate;
  • Following too closely, otherwise known as tailgating;
  • Improper passing and weaving in and out of lanes;
  • Running yellow lights and not coming to a complete stop at stop signs;
  • Speeding and going too fast for traffic conditions.

Protecting Yourself Against Aggressive Drivers

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a leading cause of car accidents. In polls, roughly 80 percent of all motorists admit to losing their temper and engaging in aggressive behavior towards other motorists in the proceeding 30-day period. To protect yourself against the risks, follow these tips:

  • Keep your cool behind the wheel and do not take the actions of other motorists personally;
  • Give other drivers plenty of space;
  • Allow plenty of time to reach your destination;
  • Practice deep breathing or other relaxation techniques if you encounter traffic;
  • If you encounter an aggressive driver, do not engage.

While you may be tempted to try and ‘teach a lesson’ to aggressive motorists, this only increases your risk of being involved in an accident. If, despite your efforts, a crash does occur, remain in your vehicle and notify the police immediately. Get a description of the driver, their vehicle, and their license plate number, just in case they attempt to flee the scene.
