‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’: Monterey Residents Urged To Take Precautions To Reduce Flood Risks

FloodedStreet

Monterey County was hit by two separate storms in the first few weeks of January 2023, resulting in heavy rainfall and widespread flooding throughout the area. In addition to extensive property damages, thousands of residents could end up suffering severe and potentially life-threatening injuries. It is important to be aware of the risks associated with flooding, even once evacuation orders are lifted. Our Monterey personal injury lawyers encourage you to remember the mantra ‘turn around, don’t drown’ and to take other precautions to protect yourself and your family.

Widespread Flooding Poses Personal Injury Risks Throughout Monterey County

The new year has not been kind to residents of California. Adverse weather has plagued the Pacific Coast, with two major storms wreaking havoc throughout coastal and inland areas. A January 12, 2023 KSBW News 8 report provided an extensive list of communities throughout Monterey County and the surrounding areas that were under mandatory evacuation orders.

As multiple inches of rainfall hammered the area, mudslides have kept road crews busy. Unfortunately, many roads became impassable at the same time that flooding of the Salina River and other waterways prompted large numbers of residents to flee their homes. In addition to flooding, other factors that increased personal injury throughout the area include:

  • Heavy traffic tie-up;
  • Reduced visibility and tire traction on wet roads;
  • Unexpected road closures;
  • Reckless driving.

‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown: How To Prevent Personal Injuries In Monterey

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health and safety agencies have encouraged people in flood-prone areas to remember the saying ‘turn around, don’t drown’ as a way of helping to decrease personal injury risks during and in the aftermath of major storms. To protect yourself and your loved ones, follow these tips:

  • Get any needed supplies in before a storm hits;
  • Be prepared for power outages and use emergency radio stations to monitor weather conditions;
  • Avoid driving during or immediately after a storm, when possible;
  • Pay attention to mandatory evacuations and follow recommended routes;
  • If staying behind or upon your return, be aware of local road closures;
  • Steer clear of flood-impacted areas;
  • Do not attempt to walk, bike, or drive through anywhere there is moving water;
  • Be aware that even six inches of water is enough to wash away you or your vehicle;
  • If you have any doubts about a road or how deep the water is, play it safe, turn around, and find another route instead.
